The track may be gone but for alot of us the memories will live on forever. There will always be great stories, photos and articles about Raceway Park no matter how long it's been gone.

Another reason for the Raceway page is because I'm currently building a Raceway Park History webite. It's a work in progress but does have some pages done.

And last but not least I'm sure most of you have read the updates on the forum board about Adams Racing Enterprises Inc. trying to build "The New Raceway Park". Hopefully all of their hard work pays off and they find a location to build this dream of theirs. If we get any updates about this project we will post them here.

Overheard conversation at Raceway Park

Phone rings...

(Barry) Ahhhhgggg Raceway

(Mayor of Calumet Park) We want to have a 75 lap Late Model feature for our 75th anniversary

(Barry) We're booked already

(MOCP) An event like this only happens once

(Barry) We got the Dwarfs coming all the time and that is 8 people you don't want to piss off

(MOCP) Can you work with us on this?

(Barry) The schedule is pretty booked

(MOCP) How about a Sunday during September?

(Barry) We don't race on Sunday's in Septemebr. We watch Bears games instead

(MOCP) What about a Friday night?

(Barry) I think we have Hobbyfest on Friday nights.

(MOCP) Well, what about a midweek special?

(Barry) Were waiting for John McKarns to call back. Were trying to get a 2nd Artgo show

(MOCP) So there is no chance of this happening?

(Barry) If we open next year why not have a 77th Anniversary race?

(MOCP) What if we pay part of the purse?

(Barry) WHAT DAY IS GOOD FOR YOU?

(MOCP) How about September 2nd?

(Barry) That is a Saturday. I usually go to Illiana on Saturday nights.

(MOCP) Well that's the day we want it

(Barry) How about right now?

(MOCP) Today is Wednesday

(Barry) So, I'll cancel tonights races. Pete is cutting grass. I'll have him sell tickets and I can make popcorn.

(MOCP) We'll wait until the 2nd, thank you (hangs up)

Pete walks in the bar...

(Barry) You still mad at me?

(Pete) Shutup jacka$$

(Barry) We told you, we're sorry we missed your Birthday

(Pete) All I wanted was some lousy cake

(Barry) We had a phone call while you were out there

(Pete) Was it McKarns?

(Barry) No, the mayor called. He wants to have a 75 Lapper this Saturday

(Pete) I usually go to Illiana on Saturday. Cancel Hobbyfest and have it Friday instead

(Barry) They offered up some money for the purse

(Pete) Let's have it now. I can sell tickets and you can make popcorn

(Barry) They want it September 2nd

(Pete) I thought you said Feature races over 50 laps are to hard to promote?

(Barry) No, I said Feature races over 50 laps are to hard to promote when you also have to buy a birthday cake. It's just to much to do in one month. Besides John Brolick don't race here anymore

(Pete) Who is John Brolick?

(Barry) I think he won the 1980 Sportsman title

(Pete) You jacka$$, that was Terry Mens...no Leo Laxton

(Barry) Your right. I think Brolick was the guy who drove through the stage

(Pete) That stage was still usuable

(Barry) All I know is he knocked out the power cord to the scoreboard when he tried that stupid stunt and we haven't been able to find that cord since

(Pete) Why do they want a 73 lapper?

(Barry) It's Calumet Park's 76th Annivesary

(Pete) We should get them a cake

(Barry) Not a problem, I'll watch the bar and you take the steamroller and go get one

(Pete talking to himself)
I showed them kids who is boss. You don't want to have a Birthday Bash for me??? I'll call up from the payphone pretending to be the mayor and we'll have a damn party. We can have cake and everything. Plus I can tell people I'm only 78.

1st Turn Gang Photo
It was March 2002 when Paul Beck asked me to try and find him an old Raceway Park sign he could restore. The Jenin family was less then a week away from handing the keys over to the property. This one was hanging on the pit fence in the far corner covering up holes in the fence. It used to hang on the popcorn stand and was the first sign you saw as you walked in the gates. After years of use it was retired. After talking to Barry he said I was more then welcome to take it. It was in real bad shape. After plenty of hard work it will now live in the Beck family backyard. It is sure to brighten up all of those 1st Turn Gang BBQ's this summer.
